A very good partnership - with that scorching repertoire from a really romantic pianist, Clara Rodriguez, balanced by Karin Fernald's cool approach, narrating the life of Venezuela's famous pianist, Teresa Carreņo, so that we get the feeling she has been round the back and seen the funny side of the storm. Fresh air blowing through the hothouse. Irving Wardle, The Times

Liszt in petticoats

Focuses on the late Romantic period, as experienced by two out-standing women from the American Continent. A gifted piano student from Missouri, Amy Fay (1844-1928) travelled to Berlin to train with the great masters of the day, in particular Liszt. Her admiration for Liszt personality and teaching methods shines through her highly entertaining book based on letters home, "Music studies in Germany". Back in the USA Amy Fay enjoyed a successful career as a concert pianist and teacher.
The other remarkable lady is Teresa Carreņo from Caracas (1853-1917), a star of the piano and in life, came from a distinguished Venezuelan family, proudly connected to Simon Bolivar. At the age of eight Teresa gave her debut recital in New York, going on to perform in all major halls of the USA and Europe. She was showered with praise from music critics and won the admiration of the greatest musicians of the time, including Rossini, Liszt, Grieg, Gounod and Rubinstein. Piano music by Teresa Carreņo, Chopin and Liszt. With actress Karin Fernald.
